Deities of Tyrus

Post  Amaymon on Thu Sep 04, 2008 11:48 am

In a setting where faith plays a prominent role, it's important to have a grasp on how deities influence and impact the world in which our characters exist in. It adds depth and and gives life to a world as well as offers a better understanding of the characters that live within it.

It is with great pleasure that we present to you a list of the Gods of Tyrus. Allow them to inspire you as you think over your character concept. Is she a religious zealot? An atheist? How does he she perceive the role that faith plays in the world around her?

Keep an eye out for further information as we draft guidelines for the clerics that follow the religious paths of each respective deity.

Pantheon of Light: Good-Aligned Deities

Post  Amaymon on Thu Sep 04, 2008 11:49 am

The Pantheon of Light

As'tasia
Major Deity
Other Names: The Giving Maiden, The Lifemother
Symbol: A heart against a golden flame
Alignment: Lawful Good
Domains: Healing, Life, Happiness, Merriment, Childbirth, Harvest
Worshippers: Order Clerics, Midwives, Mothers, Doctors, Healers
Clerical Alignments: LG, LN, NG
Favored Weapon: Yatagan

As'tasia stands a golden-haired maiden clad in a flowing gown of white, her lips constantly creased in a serene smile. A warm glow surrounds her at all times. She is the source of all healing in Tyrus, whether it be by natural or supernatural means. The life of plants, animals, and everything in between are sustained by her everpresent power. She is the polar opposite of Nysris the Foul and one of the three central deities worshipped by the Order.

Emera
Major Deity
Other Names: The Beacon of Light, the Warm Hand
Symbol: A brilliant sunrise
Alignment: Neutral Good
Domains:The Sun, Rejuvenation, Light, Truth, Resurrection, Warmth
Worshippers: Order Guardians,
Clerical Alignments: LG, LN, NG
Favored Weapon: Mace

Emera, twin sister of As'tasia, is a golden-haired maiden clad in blinding golden half-plate armor. Her very touch restores life to the dead, and her warmth sustains the whole of the shard. Her voice compels all who hear it to tell nothing but the truth, and the power she delivers to her clerics has the ability to drive away the undead as well as minions of the Pitch. She is one of the three central deities worshipped by the Order.

Honosaad
Intermediate Deity
Other Names: Rider of the Winds, The Whispering Prince
Symbol: A set of blue eyes against whisps of cloud
Alignment: Neutral Good
Domains: Travel, Jest, Air, Respite
Worshippers: Air Elementals, Elves, Jesters, travellers
Clerical Alignments: NG, CG, TN
Favored Weapon: Open hand

Son to Kian and As'tasia, Honosaad is a formless entity that sails across the shard in whisps of vapor and cloud. A trickster at heart, Honosaad's silky laughter is often carried across the lands as puffs of sharp wind just as prone to knock the hat off a weary traveller's head as it is to carry a cool breeze in a hot summer day. Honosaad's allegiances are sometimes uncertain, as he is known to have fits where he associates with the other elemental gods more often than his brothers and sisters in the Pantheon of Order.

Kian
Major Deity
Other Names: The Hand of Justice, The Defender
Symbol: A closed fist against evenly balanced scales
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Domains: Law, Order, Justice, Equality, Fairness
Worshippers: Guardians, lawmakers, paladins, police
Clerical Alignments: LG, NG, LN
Favored Weapon: Warhammer

Brother to Emera and As'tasia, Kian stands as a towering human garbed in glistening full-plate armor, a finely crafted warhammer in one hand, a set of scales in the other. A long beard drapes down his face clear down to his waist. He is the Hand of Justice in death as well as life; when one dies, they arrive before him burdened by the weight of their transgressions. He weighs their burden against their acts of purity, and sends them to one of two planes based on the tilt of the scales: the Pitch, a plane of darkness ruled by Memnok, or the Eternal Glade, home of the Bountiful Mother. He is one of the three central deities worshipped by the Order.

Loracha
Major Deity
Other Names: The Silent Huntress, Keeper of the Eternal Glade
Symbol: A green arrow set against a grazing stag
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Domains: Nature, Beasts, The Hunt, Balance, Druids
Worshippers: Elves, Hunters, Woodsmen, Hermits
Clerical Alignments: CG, NG, NE
Favored Weapon: Longbow

Loracha spends most of her time on the mortal plane, silently slipping through the forests as she guards over her lands. Those who are (un)forunate enough to witness her presence often see her as a white stag, or an elf with a magnificent longbow. Though unspeaking, she guards over her forests with an eternal vigilance and a merciless temper. Her most fervent crusade is against the gears of industry as the Age of Reason crushes her domain beneath grinding wheels and unholy science. She very rarely associates with any other gods in the pantheon.

Nyaos
Minor Deity
Other Names: The Waning Prince, The Beacon
Symbol: a crescent moon against an array of brightly burning stars
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Domains: Light, Protection, Hopeless Causes, Vigilance
Worshippers: Paladins, Lone Warriors, Travellers
Clerical Alignments: LG, CG, LN
Favored Weapon: Longsword

Son to Kian and Emera, Nyaos is a guardian of the night, a shining beacon of light in a land bathed by darkness. His powers are granted in relation to the phases of the moon, so his followers are few and far between. Those who do follow him, however, realize that he is all that holds the darkness at bay when Emera is at rest. The stars are his children, offspring of his secret love affair with Rayinala, and often guide errant travellers on their lonely journeys.

Vayd
Minor Deity
Other Names: The Bookkeeper, Lord of the Mind, The Eternal Scholar
Symbol: An blank scroll
Alignment: Neutral Good
Domains: Intellect, Creativity, Education, History, Memory
Worshippers: Scholars, Historians, Philosophers, Teachers, Innovators, Scientists, gnomes
Clerical Alignments: NG, TN, LE
Favored Weapon: contraptions; very rarely do followers of Vayd openly engage in combat(this is not currently a PC-selectable deity)

Vayd is a relatively new god, spawning from the ether as the Age of Reason begins to take shape. Fanatically dedicated to "progress," Vayd's followers perceive him as more of a muse than a god. Vayd will eventually be dubbed "the Great Betrayer," a title of notoriety gained from his murder of the entire pantheon of Order due to the manipulating coercions of Lok, the god of Industry. Vayd's happiness lies soley on the progression of innovation; little will he realize its Innovation and Logic that drives all the Gods away from Tyrus, his own presence included.

Unaffiliated Deities: "Neutral" Gods

Post  Amaymon on Thu Sep 04, 2008 11:53 am

Unaffliated Deities

Kim'urne
Intermediate Deity
Other Names: The Soul Courier, The Eternal Embrace
Symbol: A Skull within a pair of cupped hands
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Domains: Death, Change, Destiny, Travel
Worshippers: the dying, mourners, morticians, gravediggers, the undead
Clerical Alignments: TN, LE, NE
Favored Weapon: Scythe

Kim'urne appears as a towering figure in a heavy hooded black cloak riding an equally impressive black stallion. On the rare occasion that he speaks, it is in indiscernable whispers. His duty is to escort the souls of the dead to Kian for judgement, then carry them off to the plane of the afterlife as determined by Kian's scales. Those familiar with the god, however, know that he is easily bribed, and there are many souls who have escaped damnation through his greed. Instead, they choose to wander Tyrus as the undead, lost and tortured souls too attached to the physical plane and too terrified of eternity to meet the afterlife that awaits them at the end of Kim'urne's dark roads.

Myll
Intermediate Deity
Other Names: The Shapeless One
Symbol: Myll has no symbol; there is no organized religion paying the entity homage
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Domains: Magic, Chaos, Energy
Worshippers: Myll is not worshipped, it is studied
Clerical Alignments: N/A
Favored Weapon: The very magic that sustains it; Myll conceivably has every spell ever concocted and put to memory

Myll is an entity rather than a humanoid deity. It exists within the Boundary Mists itself, and because of this surrounds all of Tyrus. A being of chaos and unpredictability, mages and sorcerers endeavor to study the manipulations of its energy rather than worship it as a deity, sometimes with adverse effects. Because of its chaotic nature, Myll has never been seen in a form with consciousness; to human knowledge, it simply exists. It is the manipulation of Myll's energies that keep the Boundary Mists surrounding Tyrus swirling and thin in areas; upon Myll's destruction the Mists will solidify and harden, becoming completely untraversable.

Quaess
Intermediate Deity
Other Names: The Worldfather, The Mountain Lord
Symbol: A snowcapped mountain
Alignment: Neutral Good
Domains: Earth, Rest, Strength, Ore
Worshippers: farmers, hermits, dwarves, miners
Clerical Alignments: CG, NG, TN, NE
Favored Weapon: Battle Axe

Quaess appears as a massive dwarf with flaming eyes and an oversized battle axe strapped to his back. According to legend, Quaess and As'tasia were once lovers. Tyrus was a product of their devotion to one another; Quaess created the lands, and As'tasia gave it life. Though specifics were never chronicled, Quaess was spurned by As'tasia in favor of her brother Kian, and Quaess retreated deep into the recesses of Tyrus in anger and jealousy. To add insult to injury, Kian handed dominion over the different domains of the former lovers' creation to his family, which only further enraged the Mountain Lord. Therefore, Quaess and his children, the dwarves and earth elementals, harbor a deep-seeded resentment towards any race not of the rock.

Rayinala
Minor Deity
Other Names: Queen of the Depths, The Sea Mistress
Symbol: An open-sailed schooner on gentle waters
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Domains:Water, the Sea, Rain, Good Fortune
Worshippers: sailors, pirates, the sea races, desert dwellers
Clerical Alignments: CG, NG, TN, NE
Favored Weapon: Trident

Rayinala is a beautiful unclad maiden composed of crystal clear salt water, fish and other sea life swimming within the depths of her graceful form. A goddess rarely seen due to the short supply of water bodies on Tyrus, she is often a blessing to those that do, guiding them to port or supplying them with fish during lean times. Her gentle nature is occasionally betrayed by her short temper, whalers and pirates smashes to smithereens by her elemental servants. She is a secret mistress to the Waning Prince, and often guides ships lost at sea to the stars so her children can guide these poor souls back home.

Lords of the Pitch - Evil Deities

Post  Amaymon on Thu Sep 04, 2008 11:57 am

Lords of the Pitch

Ale'ighta
Intermediate Deity
Other Names: The Spurned Lover, The Eternal Flame
Symbol: A heart enshrouded in fire
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Domains: Fire, Uncontrolled Passion, Pain, Vengeance
Worshippers: firebugs, fire elementals, spurned lovers, those dedicated to vengeance
Clerical Alignments: CE, CN, CE
Favored Weapon: any weapon can be used by her clerics, though they will lose favor with her if the weapons are not blazing during combat

Ale'ighta is an unclad mistress composed of golden flame, twin sister and polar opposite to the Sea Mistress. According to legend, after As'tasia's rejection of Quaess, Ale'ighta came to comfort him in his sorrow. The Worldfather became enraged by her advances and drove her away in outrage. Spurned by his refusal of her love, Ale'ighta has since then dedicated herself to having her revenge against the Mountain Lord. Conniving and cruel, Ale'ighta feeds not only on the feiry destruction of everything beautiful in Tyrus, but delights in failed love affairs and the often bloody retribution that follows.

Denntor
Intermediate Deity
Other Names:
Symbol: a cloudlike figure with its arm poised to throw a bolt of lightning
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Domains: Storms, Chaos, Destruction
Worshippers: a mix of elementals, druids, those who fear the destructive power of nature
Clerical Alignments: CE, CN, NE
Favored Weapon: Spear or javelin

Denntor is the misbegotten offspring of Rayinala and Honosaad, a swirling tempest of rain, wind, and destructive chaos that comes and goes on a maniacal whim. His laughter is booming thunder that rolls across the countryside, and more often than not his passing leaves nature and industry alike in complete ruin. The only thing truly predictable about Denntor is his complete unpredictability. He pays no homage to any of the gods, and is only counted among the Lords of the Pitch because of his unquenchable appetite for complete destruction. After the conception of Denntor, Kian issued an edict among the Pantheon of Light forbidding his brethren from siring offspring; the effects of manipulating the energies of the Mists in such a way was simply too unpredicatable.

Lok
Minor Deity
Other Names: Raper of Tyrus, The Balance-Ender
Symbol: A Skull within a pair of cupped hands
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Domains: Industry, Oppression, Poverty, Lies, Bondage
Worshippers: the corrupt, the powerful, proponents of industry, slavers
Clerical Alignments: LE, NE, CN
Favored Weapon: Dagger

Lok appears in subtle disguises; he is the greedy bureaucrat, the narcisstic noble, the corrupt lawyer. His most effective assaults on the people of Tyrus have been through words rather than action; his charismatic manipulations have brought ruin to simple towns as the gears of industry march through them and devour everything in their path. He is the embodiment of corruption, his actions often demonstrating a perfect example of what happens when tyrants raise themselves up high on the shoulders of those weaker than themselves. His followers often seek to clear away whole swaths of serene landscape in favor of smoking factories and dilapidated sweatshops. He is almost constantly at odds with the Silent Huntress.

Memnok
Major Deity
Other Names: The Soul Devourer, The False King
Symbol: a crimson crown set against a black banner
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Domains:Murder, Pain, Torment, Depravity
Worshippers: the power-hungry, assassins, monsters, criminals
Clerical Alignments: CN, NE, CE
Favored Weapon: Whip

Memnok appears as a monstrous shadow with a crown of crackling purple energy and an oversized maw of jagged teeth. He is self-appointed Lord of the Pitch, a realm of absolute darkness and torment. Within it, he delightfully tortures and feasts upon the souls sent to him after Kian's judgement. But that's not enough for the False King; he would see all of Tyrus under his oppressive rule, and constantly moves his worshippers as pawns in an effort to ravage the shard and crush the Order. A self-serving, violent, and depraved entity, his only pleasure comes from the pain and misery of others. He grants power to those who pledge allegiance only to take it away from them once they've served their purpose. He is also considered father of many of the monster races, though it is uncertain as to whether that is entirely accurate.

Nysris
Minor Deity
Other Names: The Foul Crone, the Death Eater
Symbol: A Dead Rose
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Domains: Decay, Foulness, Stench, Decadence
Worshippers: lepers, witches, trolls, the mad
Clerical Alignments: NE, LE, CE
Favored Weapon: crude and simple weapons

Nysris appears as a filthy hag, her body covered with gangrene and rot. Teeth come loose from her gums as she speaks, and her very presence carries with it a stench that would cause even the strongest stomach to lose its contents. Plants wither and food spoils at her approach. She is often seen feasting on the remains of the dead, a mad glimmer in her eye. The reason for her existence is a mystery, much less how she could possibly attract a religious following. Her cause is simple: She would see all of Tyrus succumb to decay and filth.

Oughack
Major Deity
Other Names: The Lord of War, The Savage Blade
Symbol: A gauntleted fist raised upright
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Domains: War, Strength, Power, Violence
Worshippers: warlords, barbarians, soldiers, gladiators
Clerical Alignments: CE, CN, CG
Favored Weapon: Great Sword

Oughack is clad in blood-drenched and beaten full-plate armor, a humanoid skull with massive horns serving as his helm. His motivations are primal and relatively simple: He wishes to see the whole of the shard plunged into violence: only the strong would survive in his vision of the world, and combat would be the way of all things. Oughack is not without honor, however, and would rather see a follower die than disgrace themselves. Despite his code, Oughack is not a force to be taken lightly: if he had his way, the earth would be piled high with the corpses of his enemies, and the rivers would run red with blood.

Vesa
Intermediate Deity
Other Names: The Plaguebearer, the Leperous Messiah
Symbol: a green skull swaddled in cloth
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Domains: Disease, Sickness, Misery
Worshippers: the infirmed, the dying, those stricken with an incurable illness, lepers,
Clerical Alignments: CE, CN, NE
Favored Weapon: none; worshippers of Vesa often use tooth and nail to transmit some horrible disease to their adversaries

Vesa appears as a sexless being wrapped in filthy rags and a ratty hooded cloak, the stench of death following it wherever it goes. It speaks in muffled tones, blood often seeping through the soiled wrags covering its mouth as it talks. Vesa has gone mad from the very disesases it brews within its bodies, and often prophecizes of a time when disease will ravage all of Tyrus; only those who prove faithful to Vesa will overcome the impending plagues and live on to usher in the new age.

A note on clerics and paladins

Post  Amaymon on Tue Sep 16, 2008 12:45 am

To maintain favor with their respective deity and therefore retain the abilities that come with the cleric/paladin classes, players driving cleric or paladin characters will have to abide by a certain set of guidelines, each of which will differ with each deity. As those concepts are conceived and finalized, they'll be listed in the Player Guide. I just wanted to mention this as its definitely something to keep in mind as you create your character.
